Kiran Younus teaches in the early childhood division (Nursery-2nd grade) at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. In addition to being a head teacher, she created and leads two dynamic early childhood-based affinity groups. One for South Asian children and another for Muslim children at Lab. Kiran is the founder and director of River Garden, a faith-based program for Muslim kids, that has been running in the Hyde Park area since 2010. Kiran is committed to inspiring the next generation of changemakers and does this by focusing her programming on both community building and giving children agency that actively moves them towards the solidification of positive and strong self-identities. Kiran has a BS in Economics and Organizational Change from Northwestern University and holds a MA from the University of Illinois at Chicago through the Golden Apple Foundation’s Teacher Education Program.
