Sharon Bonney, a 20-year veteran in the field of adult education led efforts to raise the visibility of the value of adult education which resulted in the internationally acclaimed 7-time award winning national public awareness campaign that galvanized the adult education field to more than 120,000 connections with legislators. Through these efforts, funding cuts of $87million were staved off and $60million in funding was added to the budget for Title II under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.
She also worked with the board of directors to develop and implement a suite of upgrades such as a new conference management model for the more than 2,000 attendees from around the country, a fall virtual conference which has over 10,000 downloads annually, professional development webinars which more than 22,000 members participate in on a yearly basis, Capitol Hill Days that provide adult learners and state leaders with the opportunity to talk with legislators, and a revise of the COABE Journal that is more practitioner based and useful to the 23,000+ active members of the organization resulting in more than 46,000 downloads of the latest edition which focused on prison literacy.
Sharon currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer for COABE, is a member of the National Skills Coalition’s National Advisory Panel on Skills Equity and is also an advisory board member for the Alliance for Justice, Freedom, and Restoration, a national nonprofit organization that is dedicated to fighting human trafficking. She also holds a committee member position on the Chamber of Commerce Education, Employment, and Training Committee (EETC).
