After teaching in public schools and then in a Buddhist-inspired K-12, Richard founded Naropa’s Contemplative Education department in1990. In 2017 Colorado approved Naropa’s mindfulness and compassion-based elementary public school teacher licensure program. Richard has created Buddhist-inspired approaches to non-sectarian education programs from pre-K through higher education. He co-authored CARE for Teachers, publishes widely, and teaches internationally. For eight years he contributed to the restoration of the Bhutan’s contemplative heritage by training their educators. Now a retired professor, Richard continues at Naropa as Director of the Contemplative Teaching Initiative where he mentors Naropa faculty, continues to develop the education department, and creates contemplative pedagogy workshops.
