Mara Luna is the Director of the Upward Bound Program at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. She began her career as an elementary English teacher at a rural community on the outskirts of San Juan working with low-income families over 25 years ago. Since then, she has taught ESL at all levels from Kindergarten to adults and has over 15 years of experience in higher education. Before entering the TRIO family, Prof. Luna managed a federal grant offering professional development workshops to schoolteachers from the public school system. From the first week of starting her current position, she has been an active member of the Board of the Caribbean Association of Educational Opportunities Programs (CAEOP) coordinating the Professional Development and TRIO Achievers Committees, as well as being part of the Conference committee. In April 2018 she was elected CAEOP president after only two years on the job and was re-elected for a second term in April 2019. Mara earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Modern Languages in 1993, a Master’s Degree in Teaching of English as a Second Language (2003) and is currently working on her doctoral dissertation in Curriculum and Teaching, which she expects to finish by December 2020.
