Tom Stritikus is president of Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, a position he began in August 2018. His focus at Fort Lewis is helping students achieve success in their educational and professional careers, building FLC into a positive economic and social force in the Four Corners region, and continually evolving the campus’ facilities and offerings to meet the needs of students today and into the future.

Previous to Fort Lewis College, Dr. Stritikus was a deputy director of education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He served on the Global Learning Initiative, building a strategy to improve education in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. In addition to his work in global education, Dr. Stritikus spent three years leading work in improving education in the United States, where he oversaw initiatives of personalized learning, assessment for student learning, instructional leadership, and teacher preparation.

Prior to joining the Foundation, Dr. Stritikus was the dean of the University of Washington College of Education. Under his leadership, the College of Education strengthened partnerships with local schools and educators, most notably through innovative initiatives within early childhood education, teacher education, teacher professional development, and school leadership. By the end of his tenure as dean, the College’s annual budget had grown from $48 million to $84 million. In his last year as dean, the College was rated the sixth-best college of education in the nation (up from 16th) and second amongst public universities.

As a scholar, his work examined the effects of bilingual education policy and teacher practice on the academic lives of Latino and Asian immigrants. He worked directly with students and teachers to help them both achieve their goals and illuminate their struggles so that policy makers could best meet their needs. His articles have appeared in top-tier education journals such as the American Educational Research Journal, Journal of Teacher Education, and Teachers College Record. He is the author of the book, Immigrant Children and the Politics of English Only.

Raised in an immigrant household, Dr. Stritikus began his teaching experience with Teach For America in Baltimore. Dr. Stritikus earned his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley in Language, Literacy, and Culture.
