Dr. Carol Frieze

Dr. Carol Frieze has worked on diversity and inclusion in Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science (SCS) for the past 18 years. Her publications, teaching and research interests focus on the culture of computing, stereotypes and myths, unconscious bias, and broadening participation in computing fields. Frieze is the 2016 winner of the AccessComputing Capacity Building Award and the 2017 winner of the Computing Research Association’s A. Nico Habermann Award. Along with Jeria Quesenberry, Frieze is co-author of the book Kicking Butt in Computer Science: Women in Computing at Carnegie Mellon University, which tells a positive story of how Carnegie Mellon challenged the existing narrative of approaches to women’s participation in computing. Women@SCS has been credited with contributing to Carnegie Mellon’s success in gender balance in the computer science major. Women’s enrollment in the first year computer science major at Carnegie Mellon reached 49% in 2017 and 50% in 2018.
