Karen Basaves is a second-year pre-medicine student at the University of Colorado, Denver. She is currently majoring in Psychology and minoring in Behavioral Cognitive Neuroscience. Her identity as a first-generation student spurred curiosity around opportunities for people who are marginalized or “not the norm”. The curiosity led to her position as a policy fellow at the non-profit Young Invincibles. The non-profit allowed for hands-on learning that fostered advocacy skills in the areasĀ of healthcare and workforce development. Moving forward, Karen will continue to advocate for academicĀ opportunities for Latina women. She is now a research assistant at the Anschutz Medical Campus and looks forward to growing in her academic career.
